Focus on the Strategic Approach
Overall, the skills taught at the Dojo are given the term “Heiho”… which implies the focus on a strategic approach, rather than an emphasis on purely technical skills. That’s not to say that there is no technical emphasis… there is no substitute for skilled action… instead, the aim is to give students the ability to create their own techniques based on tactical understanding, rather than relying on a particular technique or subset of techniques.
There are three main facets to the training in the Jukuren Dojo – Goshinjutsu, Taijutsu, and Bukijutsu.
Goshinjutsu is Modern Self Protection, and covers an understanding of modern violence… including pre-fight rituals, legal considerations, social and asocial violence, and more.
Taijutsu is Classical Unarmed Combative Methods, and these skills are drawn from a range of classical Japanese schools, including:
- Takagi Yoshin Ryu
- Kukishinden Ryu
- Gyokko Ryu
- Koto Ryu
- Togakure Ryu
- Shinden Fudo Ryu
Bukijutsu is Weaponry Skills, which incorporates both Classical Weapons, such as Sword, Hanbo, Bo, Naginata, Yari, Kusari Fundo, and more, as well as Modern Weaponry Concepts, such as Knife, Security Baton, and more.
